— Joleen Ross upon hearing about the bike lane controversy in Brooklyn.
me, Johny, Kunal, Drew, at Lorelai’s, NYC: July 10, 2011. (photo taken by Zehra).
Johny just moved from Australia to NYC. He & Drew were each their very first friend, when they lived in Australia…20 years ago. They literally hadn’t seen each other in 20 years until the night before.
Drew lives in Seoul, South Korea, and was in the States for 10 days for a couple weddings. He & Kunal were freshmen year roommates at Missouri, and hadn’t seen each other in 4 years.
Kunal & I met each other through Martin (Martin & Kunal know each other from St. Louis, where they went to high school together. I know Martin because he worked with 2 of my after-college roommates in Madison, WI.) Now Kunal and I visit each other every few months and hang out like we’ve known each other for years.
Zehra knows Kunal from DC, and live just a block from each other. She was in town to visit her sister & brother-in-law who just had twins and live in the financial district.
Kunal’s sister lives just above this bar.
Johny: “This could only happen in New York City.”
Truth.
At the coffee-shop:
1) The 1st date beside me as devolved into her playing “Words with Friends” on her iPhone, and him checking out the postings on the bulletin board.
—after witnessing this, I’m the one who needs a drink.
2) Is every coffee house contractually obligated to play Cat Powers’ The Greatest from start to finish? Have I done something to offend them? Do they want me to leave?
3) Why would you go somewhere (an interior, public space) only to text-message and play games on your phone?
4) How do you run out of orange juice?
